on my heart

June 17, 2011

I have been wanting to share some pictures of my studio where I paint & create.... so I am going to include them through.out my post!
This where it all happens!
Photobucket

I have mulled over this post a bit. I get a lot of emails asking me advice on how to "grow" your blog and so I have wanted to do a post for awhile. This blog was born as 2011 New Year's resolution and from me feeling like God was calling me to share our life in this way. Truthfully, a lot of days I wake up thinking "maybe people will just get bored of my blog and all stop following it"... I am no expert, so I hope this post doesn't feel like me acting like one...
in fact most of the advice that I have to share was given to me by others.
But, nonetheless I have decided to do a blogger help post for what is on my heart.
People have shared the love with me well in this journey...so even if this helps just one person...it will be worth it!

Blogger Help 101

1. Stepping on Toes/ Blogger ETIQUETTE: Be careful asking other bloggers to give you a "plug" , or to post something on their blog etc etc etc. There are a lot of ways/ things you can ask that will put the person you are emailing in a tough spot. If you catch their attention, they will ask. If anything you can ask them to guest post on your own blog for a start! Or be a sponsor on their blog. After you develop a friendship over time....there is an appropriate way to approach it.

Photobucket

2. Sponsorships: Sponsorships are huge. But you also have to use them to your full advantage. You have to be active...Do a giveaway! I personally think that SOLO giveaways are what bring the traffic! Choose a blog that is some.what similar to yours....if people are following that blog and yours is similar they will most likely enjoy yours as well. I did all traded sponsorships until last month to "get the hang of it"...that is a great idea as well! Choose blogs that you think will best represent you!

3. Do Link Ups on other blogs: This is a GREAT way to meet other bloggers and get new traffic heading your way!

Photobucket

4. Twitter: Twitter is a FABULOUS network to meet other bloggers; promote your shop & blog. I have met so so so so many people through twitter!
Get on the bandwagon, it is worth it.

5. Comments: Everyone loves comments :).....and usually if you leave an intriguing comment or leave them consistently the person will head back over to your blog.

Oh and take off word verification! People are more apt to comment on blogs without it!

Photobucket

6. While I am on comments....don't leave nasty ones :). If something really is bothering you either email the person or just unfollow them. For example, this might sound silly but I really want my blog to be a safe place filled with lots of love and joy. Our families read my blog....I don't want a yucky comment posted for everyone to see....no one does :).

Photobucket

7. Pictures: Maybe it is just the artist in me but I am very drawn to blogs with big, beautiful pictures. Wide blogs with big pictures are fabulous in my opinion! If you aren't using photobucket or picnik, check them out, they are AM.AZING.

Photobucket

8. Variety: I sometimes struggle with this but VARIETY. If you only post about one thing then you are "zoning in" on one audience....the broader your variety...the more people you can reach!

Photobucket

9. Last, be a blog worth following! If your look and whole feel/vibe is warm and inviting....people will want to come back!

  2. Thank you so much Casey! While I've been a blog reader for years now, I've just started my own and there is so much to learn! I still have so much to do and that I want to do, maybe if I had 3 or 4 more hours in a day to sit with my computer I could get it done. :) I love your blog, you seem so sweet and genuine and real.

I pretty much agree with you on every point...

Although, I had never even considering asking someone to post about my blog on theirs. I actually almost started sweating when I emailed Busy Bee Lauren just to ask her to guest post for me. I'm so awkward ; )

Pictures pictures pictures! yes yes yes. I think posts should always have pictures.

Your artwork is fantastic Casey! Thanks for sharing it.

I also wanted to add that "follow be back..because I am following you comments are SO annoying." I think you should only "follow" blogs that you truly love and read...and leave comments on to show the author you really do appreciate everything they put out there ya know. I will linking this awesome little post over on my blog next week. Great stuff

  27. CASEY! Never, ever feel people will grow tire or "bored" of your blog! You are an inspiration, and do not let Satan rob you of your joy in thinking that! k,k?? (In saying this, I am also saying it to myself. Since I am starting out with blogging, I hear his wicked voice in my ear with the same thoughts - I am glad I am not the only one) We need one another to build each other up!!

Thanks for this post, btw, it is lovely & insightful as ever. Your gentleness and kindness just spring off the 1-dimensional page. You exude a Proverbs 31 woman, as well as the Fruit of the Spirit!

  39. I can't believe your blog has only been going since the start of this year! That's awesome. Thank you so much for the advice. It's nice to hear that variety is good, because sometimes I feel like my blog is not focused enough. I try my best not to be too random but to still share what's on my mind/heart at the time.
This may be a silly question, but... what is "word verification" ?? :)

    -no more word verification
-BIGGER photos (I've been thinking about this and finally decided I MUST figure out how to change this, although now my posts aren't "centered"... hmmm
-and I was just thinking about twitter today, and had decided I'm not going there... it seems overwhelming... and I think I already spend too much time online... but now I'm rethinking

    Thanks, Casey!

  50. Hey Casey,
I found your blog through your giveaway on Lauren's blog. So glad to see all the beauty you're creating! :) You have such a gift, and (like so many others) I really love your art. I have a growing list of artists whose work I want to hang in my home and I simply LOVE, LOVE the 24x24 commissions you posted on 3/30/11 (http://www.caseywiegand.com/2011/03/2-24x24-commissions.html) Wow. So great!

Also, this a terrific post! great tips for newbies and good reminders for the 'older folk' of the blogging world. Your plug for twitter is so true--it IS a great way to meet people and interact a little more quickly than commenting/emailing. I look forward to following ya (and not b/c I need you to follow me back) ;) You've got some great stuff to share.

    Happy Wednesday, chica!
