Well, this isn't a very "deep" on my heart this week but I have had a few people asked how we did potty training this week! Aiden turns 3 at the end of March so we definitely waited a long time to introduce this to him. I really wanted it to be a positive, fun thing. Me and him both being frustrated was not my idea of him being ready so I just waited until we could really communicate about it!
I am soooo glad I waited- these 3 days have been a piece of cake!
Day one, I talked to him about diapers and showed him his new dino underwear! We talked about the potty and I showed him a little baggie of one dollar toys that I had for him to choose from if he went in the potty. (He had 3 accidents that morning.)- I never made a big deal on those...didn't want to focus on any negative! I was thinking he needed to just have one "success" for it to click. So I turned on a movie, brought his potty in front of the tv, sat him on it and gave him a cup of water to drink. He went! He was yelling "look. look- I did it!!!"- Chris and I acted like we won the lottery and let him choose a prize. The rest of the day we had ZERO accidents! He went everytime in the potty after that first success!
Day two, he woke up and put on his underwear- basically we repeated day one but no prizes this time...just a lot of excitement! He had 2 accidents on day two- both outside and just like the first day, we didn't focus on those....just moved right past them!
Then day three, same as the first two and only one accident.
I am soooo so proud of him! It is so sweet to watch how proud he is of himself and what a positive experience this has been! I have to say, anytime prior to this if I brought up the potty he would say no and was pretty anti-toilet...but after that first positive success it just switched! We also let him pick out a new dino toy for his first number 2 success ;)!
So proud of my big boy! He did great!
Yesterday we were all driving in the car and I was telling Chris that lately Aiden hasn't wanted his pasie much anymore. He gets it when he is starting to get tired but during the day he doesn't want it much anymore. It's so amazing because we never rushed that....in a way we are letting him grow out of these things on his own, in his own time. And I love that. With potty training, bottles, pasies and whatever else- I am glad that he was a baby a little longer and as he is ready to move past them, it's on his timing. Makes me happy.
Happy Weekend Friends :) xoxo

Big boy is so super precious!

That's wonderful that potty training has gone so well for Aiden! After working with all ages, and then a 3 year old classroom in Maryland, I know how hard it can be for some kids.
ReplyDeleteWow, this is so encouraging for me! We have #2 on the way and a part of me wants to start before the baby gets here, but I'd rather have a positive experience than a negative so we'll see what happens. I'm glad it was so great for you guys!

good for you! we waited until marrin was ready too. my RN aunt always says, "they won't go to kindergarten with diapers, a paci, or a bottle" in other words, it's not a big deal to rush them - they'll figure it out!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations!!! He's getting so big! It makes me feel a lot better about not rushing things with my little guy :)
ReplyDeleteGOOD JOB!!!!!!! Both of my kids were 3, and I agree...it was SO easy to potty train them!! Both of them were finished in a day. I think waiting until they are ready (and older) makes it easy on everyone. My daughter NEVER wore pull-ups at night either. My little man on the other hand, has been a different story. He will be 4 in March and is finally waking up dry in the morning! ;)
ReplyDeleteYaay!! I'm terrified of potty training my little guy - and he's getting to the age (or at least the size) that people are starting to ask. I know I shouldn't be worried about whether people think we're going too slow... but the fact that he's in the largest size diapers the store carries and we're expecting our third does make me think "Hmm... we should probably start soon!"
ReplyDeleteI never thought of those milestones as being initiated by the child and not the parent. I like the way you let them grow out of their baby stages in their own time. I don't have children, so I just know the generalizations :)
ReplyDeleteYay Aiden!! My two year old still wants her bottles and I am so not ready to take them away. Today she only asked for it at bed time so she may be ready to let go. Me? Not so much.

What a wonderful Mother you are! I don't have children yet, but when I do, I hope to take even just one lesson from some of what you have written.
ReplyDeleteI've been thinking a lot on this. Letting Raine (our son) do these things according to his own pace. Picking up on his cues of readiness rather then push him because we feel it's time. I feel reassured reading this post. So happy to hear that Aiden is having a positive experience. Thanks for sharing!! :D
ReplyDeleteSo happy for you! What a major accomplishment! I just potty trained my 2.5 yr old twins a few months ago! I'm just glad I'm over with that! :)
ReplyDeleteI love that you aren't rushing things. Children are so perceptive and will generally know what is best for them and when things are best. We have let Harper have a choice in big things in her life (it's HER life after all) and it's been great to see her naturally give up her bottle, move out of her crib, and head towards potty training.
ReplyDeleteLIfe is too too short for frustration over the potty or a pacifier. Seriously.
I did the same thing with my kiddos, somehow it all works itself out. I rocked my youngest to sleep until he was three, couldn't let him cry it out, and at three we told him good night, kept his door open and told him we were right down the hall. He understood and never cried about it. :) Good job momma!
ReplyDeleteso awesome!! good work to your little man! can't wait for the day my little guy is out of diapers! :)

I agree...im pregnant with my first now but I think when it comes time to think about potty training etc I won't rush it. Glad it's been a positive experience for you!
ReplyDeleteSo encouraging! We are about to have a 2 year birthday and I'm wondering about potty and passi. But I like your approach. WHen they're ready, they're ready! I think that's best. That's how he weened from breastfeeding so I think that's what we'll do with passi and potty!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the potty training!
Positive afformation is always so much better!!!!!!
This is great inspiration for us moms out there! Way to go! I'm sure the way you encourage the successes makes the failures seem like no big deal, that's a good thing to take away from this post. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeletethat's awesome you let him do it all at his own pace! no rushing, all kids should be able to do that!
ReplyDeletemy daughter gave up her nuk at age 3 years and 4 months when the Dentist told her she shouldn't have it anymore. we got the car and she handed it to me and told me to throw it in the garbage. so cute!
I was a big believe in doing things when they were ready! my 2nd daughter nursed until right before her 3rd birthday but my first daughter hated it and went on a nursing strike at 8 MONTHS old, which I got her to go back to nursing for a little bit, but she quit big time on her own at 10 months, she would bite me when I tried to make her nurse, so I KNEW she was ready to quit even if I wasn't!
great job A!!!

I love this post! I feel so encouraged for the day when I have to privilege to be a mother. You make motherhood so beautiful. Thank you for sharing your life on here.
ReplyDeleteTrès bien
First baby and he's a boy... very good advise ...I enjoyed and will remember this -thank you :)
ReplyDeletego aiden! what a big boy!! oh he looks so cute in that pic! so happy for ya'll, and what quick success!!!
ReplyDeleteI've just been thinking of ways to start potty training my son. Thanks for your thoughts!~
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you just knew the perfect way to handle things with Aiden and introduced the ideas to him when he was ready--which is what being an amazing mum is all about :)
ReplyDeleteNicely done! I could not agree with your approach more! They know when they are ready so why not respect that? We did that with both kids and they were poty trained in days vs pushing it and having a stressful go of it for weeks! Good for you! Enjoy the weekend!
ReplyDeleteYay! Go Aiden! He's getting so big! Good job mama. :)
ReplyDeleteYou have really adorable kids!! I am happy this is a success.
ReplyDeleteGod Bless Girl
yay aiden!!

Way to go Aiden!!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure PLENTY of people have talked crap to you about waiting "forever" to do these things. But, I think it's highly commendable that you are making it all positive and in his timing. Doing things too early in developmental stages = stress/drama. Good for you!
ReplyDeleteawh what a sweetie and a big boy now! I remember changing my little bro(he's 16 now) diapers..he too, took his own time in being potty trained. i think he was a little over he turned 3. :)
