he calls her baby.

When we brought Ainsleigh home from the hospital Aiden was only 18 months old.
At the time I thought he was such a big boy but looking back, he really was still such a little guy :).

Ainsleigh was one of those babies you hear about.
You know the ones that never cry and sleep through the night in their own crib at 7 weeks old. The ones that you say “that doesn’t really exist”.

Then I had Ainsleigh.
And I realized that babies like that do exist.

I remember looking at chris one time saying “did this just get a ton easier or are we just better at it?” Mostly it was just her…but partially I do believe we were better at swaddling, “shushing”, feeding, looking for over.stimualtion and so on.
We felt more comfortable the second time around.
She came into our family with a smooth, easy transition.

But Aiden wasn’t so sure.

It took time.

I say all this because there has been a shift.
A huge shift.
They play together now. They hug and run and kiss and play. And I see true love and joy and acceptance between them. He defends her when we are places.

He calls her baby.

He has since she came home from the hospital…but now as her second birthday approaches he still calls her baby.

“Baby, come on!!!” He calls the “new baby” by her name- Apple….so I guess Ainsleigh will always be “his baby”….I can see them at 16 years old and her still with a nickname.

Im grateful they have each other. It’s a gift to give a little one a lifelong friend.

I was two when my sister was born. To make the transition easier for me as a new sister, my dad told me she was mine. For twenty-five years, she's been my baby. When we fight, my dad says really fast, "Don't hurt your baby!"

There's a special bond between the first and second child. Make sure you document it well.

I could have written that exact same post about my kids. 🙂 My oldest son turned 3 last month. My youngest son is 20 months. My little guy has always been referred to as "Baby", too. With a little sister, who will be here in about 3 weeks, I think my little guy will STILL be "baby" even after the new baby comes. 🙂

    I love it!

  52. Cindy says:

It is sooo sweet. I know a woman that my husband grew up with and everyone calls her Baby. He tells me that's just what everyone called her since she was, well, a baby and it stuck for everyone in the neighborhood. Cute, huh?

  58. B says:

    so sweet!! love siblings! 🙂

  59. Leigha says:

Oh Casey! This made me bawl! Our oldest was 15 months old when we had our daughter. They were SO close to eachother and he always called her 'baben daden' (baby Gracie). He called her that until he died of cancer just before his 7th bday! I'll never forget that 🙂 There's such a special bond between a brother and sister when they are the first two!!!!!!

  60. how precious! my son (8) defends and looks out for his 'sis' (7). she's shy and he's outgoing- and she still holds onto him whenever they are together in public. he doesn't even bat an eye at her holding his shirt or grabbing his arm- or insisting she attend his 'older kids' sunday school class. he loves her with a pure love which crosses boundaries of embarrassment or inconvenience. it blesses my soul every time i see his patience for her- and his self-imposed duty to protect and guard her. what love is this? except Christ's!?

  61. Jen says:

    So, so sweet!

  62. I really don't know what's cuter — those photos of your beautiful girl or that story about Aiden calling her baby! Nothing sweeter than a big brother looking out for his sister xo
