eating clean.

Chris & I are trying to “eat Clean” for 21 days… If you follow me on instagram you know that it’s been really hard for me.

There have been tears.
Which is silly.
But true.

At the end of the 21 days, I plan on writing more about the experience but I was thinking I could share a bit about how we got here and document my feelings about the past 11 days.

Chris started reading the book, Clean.

After he finished the book, he came to me and asked if I would do the 21 day cleanse with with him : it is a smoothie/juice for breakfast, healthy lunch, 2 snacks & smoothie/soup/juice for dinner.

I was really hesitant. I just love dr peppers, bread and chocolate and wasn’t really looking to do something like this. We watched the movie “Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead” and then a few days later I decided to give it a try.

I figured I could make it through one day & I could always quit tomorrow.

The first 3 days were awful. Truly awful. The fourth day was the first that I could tell a difference. The caffeine headaches were going away. I was/am slowly craving bread and coke less and less.

Today is day 11. I am not going to say it’s just a piece of cake for me now. Saturday we took the kids to a birthday party and they were serving hotdogs, mac n cheese, dr pepper, birthday cake, potato salad. That was hard for me to refuse. But I know it’s worth it. I have learned a ton about cooking and substituting foods over the past week.

A few things that have saved me: gluten free soy sauce, almond butter, green tea & chocolate almond milk. (I am not even sure that last one is on the “allowed” list but I drink it anyways)

I also have cheated some. I was starving one day and ate 2 huge bowls of oat meal with brown sugar in them which probably ruined the whole thing… but I was back on track today! The very first night I cheated and ate a few spoonfuls of peanut butter :).

I also started a pinterest board “clean eating” if you are curious as to what those meals look like!

Anyone have anything to share on cleanses, juicing, clean eating? Please share! I would absolutely love to hear your experience. Any encouragement? Does it get easier and easier?

  1. SO glad you posted this!! We were just talking about it over the weekend 😉

  2. Hayley Iskra says:

We've been clean eating/paleo for dinner for a while now. I keep saying I'm going to switch over another meal but haven't yet. Soon though. 🙂 I'm going to look into that book.

    Thanks

I have 2 friends who are doing clean eating and rave about it, one of the girls hubby lost 6kg in the first week!!

  4. natalia says:

I have done the "clean" cleanse as well. I honestly thought it got easier & after it was over I was able to transition my old eating habits and make healthy substitutions. That was the best for me anyways. I did it with a friend so the moral support helped a lot & I will say we had our moments of cheating but like you they also weren't terrible choices either. We held onto the strictness very lightly. Sometimes life happens and a spoonful of peanut butter or bowl of oatmeal is better than nothing & causing starvation mode to set in. I can't imagine having littles around, I think that would make it more challenging. So kudos to you mamas. Keep it up. Your body is loving it!!! Glad you have Chris by your side too.

  6. angelica says:

It does get easier and, in my experience, you have made it through the hardest part.

  7. Liza says:

I did it for 21 days and it was the best/hardest thing I've done as far as self-control. But you do feel so different. I threw up when I ate pizza a few weeks later. Pregnant now, so I'm eating whatever, but it's good to try. Good luck!

  8. Serious kudos to you Casey! That is so hard, especially with how convenient food that isn't clean is. Have you looked into Emeals? You can get menu plans done for you based on your eating style and they definitely have some for clean eating! Plus if you use the code newyou you can get 20% off! They send you meal ideas for the week using the sales in stores near you! Pretty nifty. You can do it! Just keep telling yourself that! Because you can! Really truly!!! One of my favorite clean eating blogs is summer harms- http://summerharms.blogspot.com Plus she is also a Christian and a VERy sweet gal!!

  9. My hubby and I did The Daniel Fast last month for 21 days which is only organic fruits, vegetables and nuts. It is hard at first just because you're trying to figure out meals, but it does get easier. I didn't pick up Diet Coke again once the fast ended, which was huge for me. I added back in a cup of coffee in the morning and then the rest of the day is water. Hang in there! You'll be glad you did!

  10. I'm so proud of you! I don't know if I'm brave enough to do a three week cleanse like this. I'd love to hear about your experience though.

Adam and I watched "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead" and man was it inspiring! I just wish we had a juicer!

You can do it! Just ten more days. If you've turned down mac and cheese and hot dogs, I think you're good to go for another week and a half.

Can't wait to hear how it went!

  11. I read Clean as well and can totally relate to your feelings towards it!

I never did a full 21 day cleanse but I did weekly ones after I read Crazy Sexy Diet . And I love juicing and blending it really helps my overall well-being.

I find substituting hard as well would be great to learn new recipes!

I think you did great so far and believe me we all did cheat here and there 🙂

  12. Carey King says:

I've adopted a "clean eating" but not for 21 days but permanantly. I follow a relaxed Paleo eating method and all my cravings stopped- apples I think helped the most.
I have a family of personal trainers and I'm a pilates instructor myself and the big thing I picked up from all the studying we all did- extreme diets never work, so trying to do things perfect for a period of time usually results in you binging. Paleo is healthy normal eating and you not cutting out much at all, and you get different levels of Paleo. I want my kids to eat a healthy balanced diet so my husband and I practice this now, however we also love to eat chinese or oreos now and then- main thing is if you can eat 90% right its more than enough.

  13. I'm still breastfeeding would clean eating be okay to do? If you are still breastfeeding have you seen any change in your milk production?

  14. Maggy says:

Get it girl. Chocolate almond milk is legit – er, maybe the unsweetened one is best, but baby steps! It's a pretty spiritual thing too, to cleanse your body and get it back to the basics. I hope the experience is even better than you expected!

  15. April says:

Hi Casey! I think your focus/approach on eating healthy is one of the biggest changes. I do the 17 day cleanse (basically all protein, fruit, and veggies), and I've realized adding important supplements like flax seeds into my juice/smoothies is a HUGE help! They are so good for you and keep you fuller longer. I use coconut oil (substituting butter) in almost every recipe I make dressings with greek yogurt for marinading chicken or slathering it on baked chicken with spices. It's delicious! And if you can eat bananas I recommend a "vanilla" ice cream you can make with bananas and milk! 🙂 Hope this helps.
    Hugs! april

  17. Hanna says:

Awww…Casey, it absolutely gets easier!!!! The more sugar and carbs you eat, the more yor going to crave them! Your definitely through the worst of it but there are still
    Easier times to
Come! Plus the energy your going to have should outweight the cravings!I think it's wonderful your doing This. This is how I live when I'm not pregnant and honestly I cannot wait to get back to it actually!
Try baking a simple recipe with gluten free flout and coconut milk. I have an awesome berry cobbler recipe that is amazing!!!! Also you can make an awesome vanilla rice pudding with vanilla almond milk and risotto rice. I can email you specific recopes if you want but google some gluten free sweets recipes.
This is a great practice of discipline Casey. You will not be sorry! Xoxoox Hanna

  18. I don't find it get's much easier if I'm being truthful. We've been eating clean since Jan 2nd! I do FEEL better though.
That said, give agave nectar a try? It's sweet and over greek yogurt and good granola it's almost, ALMOST like a treat.
If you can, see the documentary Hunger for Change. It is what motivated us.

  19. In mid-Jan, my husband and I started the Whole30 Paleo challenge, so we basically could only eat meat, veg, fruit, and nuts for 30 days. It was fun doing this together and even though it was hard, I loved how when we'd climb in bed at night we'd joke about quitting, baking a pan of brownies, and eating the whole pan.
It was also one of the hardest things I have ever done because like you, I love bread and oatmeal. It made me realize how much pleasure I place in eating and having that taken away and not getting to eat what I wanted to, left a hole. The Lord showed me that food had become an idol and that He wants to fill all of those spaces and be my source of joy. Not that we aren't supposed to enjoy food – Heaven is going to be a big banquet, but I was using food as a part of my life that I controlled. So for that insight and of course the health benefits, I am thankful for the cleanse. But I have to say, I got sick on day 14 and basically didn't eat anything since I didn't have the energy to make myself some eggs or almond flour pancakes. My husband came home and was like, "this is crazy, here is some toast and oatmeal" which definitely made me feel better. 🙂 So only 14 days in, we were officially done, but it definitely has left a mark on us in the way we view food, our self-control, and not holding back anything from the Lord. God bless you guys as you persevere!!

  20. Case, the cool thing is that if you allow your body to detox your body will begin to crave things that are totally good for it. Your strong sugar cravings will go away (and those usually hint thAt there is a mold/yeast/fungus overgrowth in your gut) and you will heal! And feel so cean!! I am always trying to detox my body, because we are supposed to live in a stare of constant detoxification. A few summers ago I was in rough shape (If you can imagine me being worse tha I am now! Ha!) and did a 4 month only juice and homemade bone broth detox. I was also allowed raw goats milk. The first week is always the worst..chills, headaches, weakness.. This is good! It means your body is working well and you Are getting rid of things that are stored In your gut and muscles. Keep it up.really. You are doing something that is not on,y good for you, but also good for the health of your kids! They watch everything you do and if you can teach them to eat well while they are young, it will be so beneficial for them as they get older because they won't have as many of those harmful toxins in their bodies!! I would suggest too, making your own bone broth for your soups. The marrow from the bones is amazing for your gut. It has so many benefits I can't type it all here, but if you need instructions on how to do it just ask! Lobe you sweet friend.

  21. Ugh I wrote this awesome, encouraging comment and it deleted it! I'm on an I pad so I'll try again when I get to a computer haha. Love you and keep it up!

  22. Chandra says:

Our whole family adopted the paleo lifestyle a year ago this month. It was a difficult transition, but we pushed through and now that we are on the other side…I will never go back to grains or dairy. The way that we all feel and the health changes that have been made for each of us was/is totally worth all the tears and frustrations in the beginning. Most people have an emotional attachment to the foods they love and that is what makes it the most difficult. Big pat on the back to you guys for giving this a go. The best changes are made about 6 months in because that is when your body has really started to heal itself from all of the damage caused by grains and dairy. I am amazed at the things my kids will eat now, and how much healthier they are.

  23. Ali says:

I don't have any suggestions (sorry!) but a question: are you nursing, and if so, how does this affect your supply? I'm always curious when people make dramatic changes to their diet while nursing nad more than the content, always wonder if a reduction in volume affects your supply. I would love to do clean eating after I have this current baby, but also am very worried about my milk supply (I have had 2 other children and bouts of my milk supply tanking). Thanks!

  24. Cate says:

I started clean eating in January 2011, and together with a dedication to Zumba classes 4-5 days a week, I lost 60 pounds. It definitely works, and your body just feels so much better for it. The way I approached it is we ate God-made food, not man-made. If it has an expiration date, I wasn't eating it. For sure, there were some moments when I splurged. I think you need to have that little allowance.

  25. Lou says:

Wow!! Good on you and I think you would be let off for having a few tiny slip ups. Do you think you would carry this on after the 21 days?

  26. Arielle says:

Aaaa I've always wanted to try to eat clean. Good job on surviving! 😉

  27. Mary Sauer says:

I admire you for just diving in! We've been cutting things our a little at a time and replacing them with clean food. We just focus on things with less ingredients. A lot of the time this means making more at home. It's crazy to me that tortillas, for instance, have a whole paragraph of ingredients when you buy them in the store, but at home I can make them with ww flour, olive oil, water, & salt!
The same with almond butter—I just made it myself yesterday & it only has one ingredient–almonds for 20 minutes in the food processor!

Good luck on your new eating habits–looking forward to hearing more!

  28. Mara and Jae says:

i am not a fan of soy milk, but that chocolate almond milk isn't half bad! i say drink it up 🙂

i've always wanted to do one of these cleanses, but never have. i think it'd be good for me. good luck!

  29. mai says:

i love hearing/reading about people making healthier food choices! can't wait to read more about your experience. 🙂

  30. My new years resolution is the same.. clean eating. I cut out fast food about 5 months ago and that helps a ton. I would say if you don't make it past the 21 days doing it all just start small. Maybe take out soda in your diet and work from there. I took cheese fries out first, then fast food all together and now I am working on eating more greens daily. it's much more enjoyable when you don't feel like you are taking out everything you love all at once. Good luck!!

  31. Way to go! This doesn't sound easy at all. But I want to try it!

  32. funny, cause husband and i have been doing something similar. i had been following 100daysofrealfood.com and then one sat morning husband and i watched food, inc and went straight to the farmers market afterwards. not only is it healthier but its a great way to stick it to the man 🙂 its crazy how much control big food has over what we eat … we decided to not let them control that in our home as much as possible. im not saying ill never eat taco bell again but i sure do feel better.

  33. Anonymous says:

Clean eating is HARD. I read up on it a little bit about a year ago, and I made big changes, but anything but STRICT changes. I can't imagine doing it full force. I always find challenges like this interesting and fun at first, and then I get annoyed with them. Haha! But any GOOD changes are just that – good changes!

  34. If he liked Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead, he should watch the documentary Food Matters. They both have tons of good information. We are literally killing ourselves with our poor eating habits. Stick with it, it's so worth it.

  35. Ashle Potter says:

You go, girl! I so need to do this I just don't think my husband will agree to it. Maybe I will get him that book for Valentine's Day… haha so romantic. 😉 I need to go to your Pinterest board and see if there are some meals that we could try. Thanks for posting this, I am very inspired!

  36. I can relate! Just over a month ago my fiance and I decided to do a similar clean eating style. For us it meant cutting grains, refined sugars and dairy (aka. paleo) It made me really step back and realize how much processed foods I was eating. We bought a juicer and we've juiced almost every day since. I didn't have a huge "aha" moment like some people. On day 30 we decided to have our first cheat meal and I didn't feel icky afterwards like I had thought I would. But even so, I still wanted to go back to it the next day.

    My must haves:
-almond meal for muffins and pancakes(much less expensive than almond flour, it is 4.99 a bag at Trader Joe's)
    -almond butter
-popcorn (this is not paleo but we make it with olive oil and it has kept us sane!)
-seltzer water, it helped me with the craving for soda since it has the carbonation
-HONEY. I use honey all the time in my tea and in my baking
-sweet potatoes. These are key for us. We got a mandolin and we make fries and chips about 4 times a week

I'm still figuring it all out but I know that for the first time in my life I actually feel confident in the way I am eating.

    Keep us posted!

  37. Hi!! Hang in there it WILL get easier…I have been vegan for a little over a year and at first I thought it would be near impossible but as I learned what to substitute for what I was craving and learned to make things like cashew cheese I haven't looked back..also I found that once I started to rid my body of certain foods and drinks that I craved them less…I have a food only instagram account that I share things that I make in my kitchen..it is plantstrongmama..Good Luck!!! I really enjoy your blog:)

  38. Gina Norman says:

We've been eating clean for about 11 years now, switched over when my daughter was 7, so it's all normal for us now.

BUT we have incorporated somethings back in, it's good to have those treats once in a while. I don't want to make anything an idol in my life, and this way of eating became one for me.

We shop at Whole Foods only and that helps a ton, makes it easy to stay away from the terrible junk out there.

    Good luck on your journey!

  39. Desiree says:

I did the "7" challenge this past fall for 21 days. I feel your pain. It was sooo hard – but I learned so much. Keep leaning on the Lord, He will help you through.

  40. 17 Perth says:

So weird you are posting this–my husband and I have really been considering this. My biggest hesitation. Coffee. I mean–I love it. Silly, but true. He recently found out he is most likely allergic to gluten. Yikes…so that is what sparked it! Thanks for your insight. Encouraged to read more!

  41. This is inspiring * As I eat my Belgian waffle while reading this ha ha! So great, I am convinced it would be nothing but great, I just need to force myself to try it!

  42. Courtney says:

My boyfriend & I started Paleo yesterday! I was pretty hungry yesterday but know that those feelings will soon get less intense. I love all the fruit & veggies I get to eat though.

Can't wait to hear what you think/how you feel at the end of the 21 days!

  43. toi says:

i did a cleansing week but just managed to go past day five. i want to do that again and reading this motivates me because I know i am not the only one who finds it difficult but i am happy you are doing great. 11 days= kudos to you and Chris. Definitely going to try eating clean once again!

  44. Miranda says:

YES! We eat clean – paleo here. Last year I started by cutting out refined sugars/flours. This January, after we had fallen backwards a little, I did the 21 day sugar detox. It has been awesome! And once that ended, I just transitioned into mostly paleo eating.

It's hard at first, but you really become aware of what you're putting into your body and what ingredients shouldn't be there!

  45. Miranda says:

ALSO – to anyone asking about pregnancy/nursing – this is a WAY healthier way to eat. You are filling your body with good, organic, clean foods. No refined or processed crap. I'm still nursing my 21 mo old during the day and my milk supply is fine. There is a minor adjustment in the 21day sugar detox for nursing/pregnant moms but it was minor. Like, eat a sweet potato every night or something.

Overall – cutting out refined junk, eating organic, filling up on vegetables and grass fed meat is GOOD for you!

🙂 PS Grass fed butter is AMAZING. Cook with it!

  46. Crystal says:

It definitely does get easier, and (unless you feel compelled to) you definitely don't have to keep up the 'strictness' of the cleanse. Everyone's body is different, so add things back in that make you feel good and function well. There is no perfect diet…listen to your body!. And nothing has to be all or none! I think that's how I maintain clean eating…it's 90% clean, the rest includes my beloved ice cream, an occasional pastry, pizza, and I definitely do dairy in moderation. Also, check out the benefits of coffee before giving it up for life! 🙂 Once you figure out what foods make you feel mentally and physically healthiest, stick close to it and it will be totally worth whatever you are giving up!! Hope this is encouraging. Love your blog and your heart by the way! Been reading for a few months now:)

  47. misty says:

OK, so i've thought about doing something similar {if not only for health reasons} BUT my one draw back is not being able to incorporate this with the whole family.

    MY question to you…
    what about your babies??
are you fixing them clean meals and snacks too?
that was my struggle – my hubs wasn't so crazy about clean stuff, and hailee wouldn't be too crazy about it either.

I think it's a great idea and know your body is going to thank you for it, seriously!!
… as i'm sure it already is 😉
    hugs sweet friend!!!
    you got this.

Thank you so much for posting this! I've been wanting to do an eat clean cleanse for while but didn't know where to start! I can't wait to read more in detail about it. It must be a really good book because they are out of stock of "Clean" in all three of the Barnes and Nobles by me!

  49. Katie Cook says:

You go girl!!! I loved reading this!! As a result of dealing with an autoimmune disease, I started weaning myself off gluten and dairy (so hard at first!), but I immediately felt so much of my inflammation going down (that was over a year ago)! Just in the past 5 months I started learning more about eating raw vegan! I don't eat all raw vegan (I love me some bacon!), but found this AMAZING cook book called "Raw Food Made Easy for 1 or 2 People" and it is incredible! Especially the dessert section! You can make the most delicious foods that have nothing bad in them and are super natural! It's cheap on amazon, and it's totally easy and worth it! Eating clean and natural has literally changed and healed so many of the things I had been dealing with! I'm so curious about this book you are reading…i'll have to check it out! And…just found your blog and love it:) Kat Harris is a good friend of mine from our IC days, so it was fun to read the post that she did on you! Thanks for being such a radiant and genuine example of someone living for the Lord Casey!!!

Hey nice work! Like you said, it's not easy but it's totally worth it. My wife and I started a change in our diet 3 years ago, and while hard at the beginning, we've never looked back (since we got past the beginning!).

At this point the junk food, especially when you mention mac and cheese or dr pepper, don't even sound appealing. Your tastebuds change. You might go back and try it once then be repulsed by how it makes you feel afterwards, so you just move on and forget about it.

We started a site at http://www.Fooduciary.com that is all about clean eating. We'd love for you to check it out and see what you think!

I just found your blog through the valentine exchange. I must say that I am very proud of you. I did a juice fast for only 4 day and cheated a time or two in that short period, but I am happy with even the little progress I made in that time. I've slowly but surely started eating some of the things I use to and really want to try the clean eating deal. You've inspired me! So keep up the good work and when you slip up just get back up and keep going! I'll follow along to be your cheerleader!

I give you so much credit for during this! I know how hard it is to monitor food.
I have a disease that motivates me to do that…but I still struggle!

My husband and I just watched "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead" as well.
We were definitely inspired by it and went out and purchased a juicer.
We are excited to get started working on this together.

It's always easier to do things like this when you have the love and support of someone else! 🙂

You have no idea how much this thrills me to hear that you and the hubs are taking this challenge. Please don't give up. And keep seeking out more knowledge. I truly believe that God requires us to honor our bodies. Eating healthy is one way to do so. Our household made clean eating our lifestyle 2 years ago. And we've never looked back. If you love peanut butter, by all means enjoy some 🙂 get organic peanut butter and slather some on toasted Ezekiel bread, then place sliced bananas and drizzle with raw, local honey. I promise you, you and the kiddos will love it and its extremely nutritious 🙂

LOVED your comment Z! Spot on. Eating clean should be tasty and fun, not a drag. And I couldn't agree more with the honoring our bodies part. Life is so much more complete and full, what it was designed to be, when we do our part to avoid health concerns that we have control over.

  66. Good on you Case! It's hard to do a complete change, I began with a sugar free challenge (allowing fruit, honey and mayple syrup). I increased exercise and now I feel strong, my energy is more balanced and I sleep well. I'm a better mum for it! Also read the back of labels, lots of hidden sugars and preservatives and colours. If you have a tough day try again tomorrow. Fruit becomes your sugar fix, I found apple purée or banana and yoghurt (sugarfree) with almond meal helped me of an evening. Also in Australia we have all natural peanut butter, nothing added. Xx

  68. That book looks very interesting! Sometimes I get so frustrated living w/ my parents while I'm getting through school b/c they're the ones who buy the groceries (and not very healthy ones!). As soon as I'm buying my own groceries again, I'm definitely doing to try something like this. My body will thank me for it, I'm sure!

I'm planning to do the detox in 'Clean Gut" by Dr. Junger — did you use supplements during yours? The book mentions them, but I'm curious if they are necessary.
